Contrary to popular belief , the government doesn't just hand out free money, even if they call you about it.
A federal grant scam has people thinking the government is giving any where from a hundred dollars to thousands, and all they have to do is pay a small fee.
The so refundable fee that you can pay using a credit card, but it's really to gain access to your banking information.
The fake government representative will also provide you with a promotional code and another number to call to collect the money.
Fact Finders tried calling one of the numbers provided by a viewer but didn't get a response.
Some agency names the scammers will use:
* The Government Grant Association
*Federal Government Information Center
*Federal Research Funding & Dept. of Revenue
Here are some tips on avoiding a scam like this:
* Know that no government agency will call or email you about grant money.
* Real government grants require a lot of paperwork and aren't guaranteed.
*If you have to pay for something then it's not free.
