The Softail is a motorcycle that offers a rear suspension system, yet still able to give the look of a hardtail frame, as the shock absorbers are hidden underneath.
Bill Davis, a passionate Harley Davidson rider and engineer from St. Louis, Missouri, was the original designer of the Softail. He created the design in the 1970s and later sold his patents and proto-type to Harley Davidson in 1982.
The first Softail, the Harley-Davidson FXST Softail, was released in 1984. Since then, a number of different models have been introduced. There are several models of the Softail. There is the Fat Boy, which has the original fat custom icon with a robust style; The Fat Boy Low, the down-and-dirty version of the Fat Boy; the Blackline, the minimalist throwback icon; the Softail Deluxe, a bike wrapped around modern power and performance; the Heritage Softail Classic, the original dresser spirit with modern touring capabilities; the Softail Slim, a blend of classic, raw and contemporary power; and the Breakout, with big wheels and drag-bike attitude.
