Wichita City Manager Gives Dash Cam Progress Report

By Chris Durden (WICHITA, Kan.)

An advocacy group continues its push for cameras in Wichita police cars. Members of Sunflower Community Action met with the City Manager Robert Layton on Saturday for a progress report.

Police installed cameras in eight of its vehicle last year. Layton says the dash cams have helped with investigations. He also says the video allows the department to know if officers are following procedure.

Still, Layton says there are limitations. "We just can't provide an on demand for the court system which is where our greatest benefit is. As a result of that we're looking to do some things to increase bandwidth so we can take and do an automatic download to a central server and then have that service available for prosecutors, judges and staff."

Layton says the city is working to secure funding for additional cameras and more bandwidth. He hopes to eventually install cameras in 22 vehicles.
