Victims in Sedgwick County Crash Identified

by Cliff Judy & Chris Durden (SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan.)

A memorial marks the spot where two Haysville men lost their lives early Thursday. Hours later, friends of 19-year-old Colton Emerson and 25-year-old Beau Blake continued to visit the crash site.

It all happened shortly before one o'clock in the morning when a Camaro and a grain truck collided near 63rd South and Broadway.

A sheriff's deputy witnessed the accident. The deputy says he began following the Camaro after it turned onto 63rd Street South and began driving into a construction zone.

Location of Accident

The sheriff's office says the deputy did not activate lights or sirens initially, but the deputy says Emerson accelerated to well above the posted speed limit and hit the grain truck.

Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office investigators say they found an open container in the cab of the truck. Authorities arrested the 28-year-old driver on suspicion of DUI.

Friends of the victims say they loved working on cars together.

"If you needed (Emerson), he was there," says Shawn Gales.  "If you called him, he was there.  If you needed a laugh, he'll make you laugh.  He'd be there."

A passenger of the truck suffered minor injuries in the crash. A third person in the truck was not hurt.
