The Schurz Communications Board of Directors, parent company of KWCH 12, has approved $500,000 in funding for improvements to the KBSL antenna in Goodland.
KBSL was off the air for four days in July when equipment on the 50-year-old tower failed. Engineers diagnosed the problem and temporary repairs were made. However, we have only been able to broadcast at half-power since the summer.
Due to the age of the antenna and a lack of parts being available, we determined that a total antenna replacement was the only viable option. We have chosen a new antenna and have placed an order for it.
Replacing the antenna requires us to modify the current tower to support the new equipment and make sure it meets current industry and federal standards for wind and ice. This modification will be done at the same time as the antenna
installation.
We anticipate work to begin sometime in December. We hope to again be broadcasting at full power in northwest Kansas by the end of the year, weather permitting.
