For What it’s Worth—on this January 22 -- Why do belt sizes not correspond to the waist size of the pant that they are to be used with? Why are the buttons on a woman’s blouse on the left, when on a man’s shirt they are on the right? Why do I know that?
Beyonce---
Bet you wish I had a picture. Can we just retain this woman to sing the national anthem upon request? Her rendition at yesterday’s inauguration was marvelous, the best I’ve heard since Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl.
Poll questions---
KU at number three, K-State at eleven and Wichita State is twentieth in this week’s Associated Press basketball poll. The ‘Hawks are one of about five teams that could make an argument for number one, although as many times as the top team has been beaten this season—who needs the aggravation? The Wildcats are a curious case of disparity—11th in the human poll, but only 44th in the widely respected KenPom measurements (kenpom.com) and the BPI (basketball power index). I don’t question Wichita State’s ranking, but I do find it curious that they have a better record than VCU, which they beat on the road and yet they trail them in both polls (by 5 spots in the coaches).
Finally, chief rivals---
Without Missouri, most KU fans have been forced to accept K-State as its rival. The ‘Hawks have forever been the team that Wildcat fans love to beat, it’s just that it doesn’t happen very often. The Jayhawks have won in 47 of the last 50 meetings between the two and have lost just twice to the ‘Cats in Manhattan since 1983. They call this a rivalry? Wait a minute, the purple people would implore: the tide has turned a little since Bob Huggins and Frank Martin…right? Ok, so KSU has won three times in their last 16 meetings, including twice in the last five years at home. So there is some……progress.
For the 27th time with meaning---
KU and K-State have played every year since 1912; the series began in 1907 and has survived 18 different presidents, two World Wars and disco. Kansas has won 67 percent of their meetings with KSU and is a three and a half point favorite to win tonight. The’ Hawks have looked a little shaky on the road at Texas Tech and Texas, especially shooting the ball. But they have a history of playing well in big games and this one is for first in the Big 12. It will be interesting, both teams are offensively challenged, at this point, both win with defense first.
Making a point?
Belittled by comparisons to Bill Self, who he followed at Illinois—Bruce Weber held a mock funeral for the now Kansas coach. I wonder how long Self’s memory is—long enough to want to make a point tonight I bet.
Super hype---
Until next week, just one fun fact a day will have to suffice in this space. The brothers Harbaugh are the only siblings to have ever coached in the NFL; they’ve faced each other only once—last year, when John’s Ravens beat Jim’s 49ers 16-6.
See you tomorrow…
…to look back on KU’s visit to K-State and WSU’s trip in to Missouri State.
