Frequently Asked Questions about Mobile DTV
What is Mobile DTV?
The transmission tower that carries Sunflower Broadcasting, Inc. signal to homes has been retrofitted to deliver a Mobile DTV broadcast signal. That signal has the ability to deliver local, digital broadcasts on multiple mobile devices, without the need for additional Wi-Fi or data fees.
Can I watch Mobile DTV right now?
Yes, if you buy a mobile DTV device. Be careful, some advertisements will label a television as "mobile" when it really means "portable" as in you can move the television. Make sure the device you buy is M-H-DTV capable to be sure it can pick up a mobile television signal. Cell phones, tablets and laptops do not have Mobile DTV capability right now, but the technology is supposed to be added in the near future. You can buy an adapter called a dongle to watch on your laptop right now.
How far will the Mobile DTV signal reach?
It has a predicted 20 mile radius from our studios in northeast Wichita.
Does Mobile DTV use the internet or my cell phone data plan?
No, Mobile DTV doesn't use the internet or your data plan. Mobile DTV is a broadcast signal, which mean it's free over the air. It's based on the ATSC M/H broadcast TV standard.
How is Mobile DTV different than the KWCH App?
Our App uses your data plan, Mobile DTV does not. For example, in a severe weather situation Mobile DTV allows you to watch our coverage if the internet goes down or the power is out. It provides the public a more dependable and cheaper option for emergency information. Our live streaming video you are watching now is provided through an internet connection.
When will Mobile DTV be more accessible to the public?
Industry groups say that there are limited choices for adapters, televisions and tablets but should be widely available by Christmas 2012. Samsung will market a phone, RCA is manufacturing portable Tvs and tablets and a variety of adapters will be available for iPad's, Android tablets and computers. Think of it like a camera on your phone - you used to attach one to your computer, now every phone, laptop and tablet has it already installed. This will be the future for mobile television as well - the devices you buy will already have the antennas in them.
Why is KWCH broadcasting Mobile DTV right now?
To enhance our coverage by offering viewers the latest options in technology. KWCH has always been a leader in technology and we are continuing in that direction.
What will KWCH broadcast?
Right now we are airing our Always On Storm Team 12. We plan to provide additional programming in the future.
Why can't I just use an antenna on my mobile device to pick up the traditional KWCH broadcast signal?
The traditional signal uses a different kind of technology that does not work well with a mobile device. The traditional signal breaks up with any movement, but the Mobile DTV broadcast signal works when you are in motion. It will remain steady and clear up to 60 miles per hour.
