A convicted murderer is still on the run. As of Wednesday morning, Saline County authorities still don't know where Antonio Brown Sr. is located. They've searched for him since Monday afternoon.
Around 4:15 Monday, Brown walked away from the Saline County Jail. Authorities had just transported him to Saline County to be sentenced for the death of Salina toddler Clayden Urbanek.
Eyewitness News asked Sheriff Glen Kochanowski how Brown was able to just walk away. The sheriff says Brown and two other inmates were in a holding cell. He says somehow the door to the holding cell was unlocked. Brown walked out the door and into a sally port, which is a secure entryway.
The sheriff says once in the sally port, Brown walked alongside a car leaving the building. Once outside, he walked away from the jail. Ten minutes passed before anyone noticed.
"Something happened to keep that door opened. We are looking at various different people who were working yesterday to see what happened and why it happened," Sheriff Kochanowski said.
The sheriff says the fact that the jail is understaffed may have also played a role. "Something like this was bound to happen because there are not be enough people working," he said.
The sheriff says an internal investigation will help figure out exactly what happened. But for now, his focus is finding Brown.
"We have no idea where this guy is at. Right now we are hoping he is in our general area, but we don't have any idea. Lets remember he's been gone since 4:50 Monday. I think people should be very worried because it's unpredictable right now what this guy's going to do. He's looking at a possible life sentence," he said.
Clayden's family is worried. His father says the last day has been tough. Jorden Urbanek was at work when he found out Brown escaped.
"I told my boss I was leaving and I went to go look for him and just try to help the cops or just try to find him myself. I think about my son daily, 24/7. I don't get much sleep, last night I didn't get any sleep at all," Urbanek said.
Clayden's grandmother says she's scared.
"I am worried that he is going to try to break into my house, get into the car. I am worried, he might have an extra key or something somewhere. I don't know how he's getting around," said Lori Urbanek.
The sheriff says Brown was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, gray jail pants and croc shoes. They say he should be considered extremely dangerous and should not be confronted.
The search for Brown prompted Bennington Schools to be put on lock down Tuesday. The school district says there was no evidence that Brown was in the area, but each principal has the right to put a school on lock down at any time for the safety of the students. So the schools just used the lock down as a precaution.
