It snowed in parts of northwest Kansas, the flakes started falling in places like Atwood, St. Francis and Plainville Friday morning.
The flurries have stopped and now a freeze watch is in effect.
"I've seen it in late September that we would have a first frost, but it's coming," said Sedgwick County Extension Agent Bob Neier.
The best advice for growers is to cover up your tender plants, like peppers and melons this weekend. Plus you may want to take your holiday pumpkins inside.
"If it's flat up against the building, they will probably be fine," Neier said. "But if they are out a ways and it gets down into 24 or 25 degrees, they will frost over."
While colder temperatures could hurt some plants, it won't knock out everything.
For allergy sufferers the biggest problem right now is ragweed. Recent rains have helped this plant grow pretty healthy in Kansas and a frost isn't going to help. Its going to take a hard freeze to kill it off
That means we have a few more weeks to suffer through itchy eyes and sneezing.
"Because of the fields and disturbed soil, we promote weeds here," said Wichita Allergist Doctor Van Strickland. "So we are usually in the top two or three for fall allergies."
Strickland says most over the counter medications can bring some relief. "It works better to take them regularly until the season ends," Strickland said.
