As the Wichita School Board nears a final vote on school boundary changes, upset parents are making themselves heard.
At Monday night's meeting about 20 people addressed the board to talk about school closures and other boundary issues.
Security was called in to remove one speaker from the podium. Another audience member was removed for speaking out of turn.
"You say this process started 18 months ago that is in part a huge lie," parent Charity Chapman told the board.
Board president Betty Arnold stopped Chapman and eventually had security escort her from the podium.
At least two of the speakers intentified themselves as being part of the "occupy Wichita" movement.
After hearing from the speakers, the board focused on "grandfathering" issues.
Four options were put before the board Monday night.
The board heard the following options:
High School options
- No students grandfathered
- Juniors only
- Sophomores and Juniors
- All students could granfather
Middle School options:
- No students would be grandfathered
- 7th grade only would be grandfathered
- 6th and 7th grade would be grandfathered
Elementary School options:
- No students would be grandfathered
- 4th graders could be grandfatered
Northeast High School options:
- Keep it a pure magnet
- Reserve 25% of the 9th grade lottery seats for students within Heights Boundary
- Reserve 50% of the 9th grade from neighborhood
Board members voted to basically eliminate a few of the options, but will not vote on grandfathering until after a final vote is made on boundary changes at the March 5th meeting.
