Students and staff in the Chapman School District voted. Now Chapman's mascot has a new look.

The new "Fighting Leprechaun" was unveiled Friday night.

Despite having the previous mascot for more than 40 years, Notre Dame University challenged its use on copyright grounds. The university said the mascot was almost identical to its famous icon. The Notre Dame leprechaun is a federally registered trademark and the school prohibited the distrct from using it or the term "Fighting Irish."

The district launched a contest last fall to select a new mascot. A committee picked four finalists from 78 entries in December.

Chapman's students accounted for a third of the mascot vote, another third came from staff and the final third from the community.
