Talking about destruction is a good thing in McPherson.
"It's a mess," said Kelly Pauls, with the McPherson Lumberyard.
A 4,000 lbs. wrecking ball made its mark on history this week, taking down grain elevator silos that have stood since the 1920s. The storage units have not been used for more than 50 years.
"It is the main attraction," Pauls said.
"They should have roped this off and charged admission," another resident said.
Dozens of people have stopped to witness the destruction first-hand. From parking lots to street corners, it's the talk of the town.
"This is something you don't see everyday," said one entertained viewer.
It's taken a while to make a dent in the rebar, concrete and steel surrounding the structure. But some witnesses have said they expect the building to be a pile of debris soon.
The big booms may not be silent for long.
"Rumors are they are going to take down over 11 silos," said another man watching the destruction.Mid-Kansas Cooperative plans to build an office in the area after the debris is cleared.
