(DODGE CITY, Kan.)—
Work begins on a project to restore Dodge City's Santa Fe depot. The building is 114 years old. The Dodge City Tourism Task Force and The Depot Theatre are behind the project. They say it will both stabilize and enhance the more than century-old depot.
The depot is still active, serving AmTrak trains and theater productions. There are also regular tours focused on the depot's history.
"Whether it be AmTrak, the people that come on the train, or the people that come to the theater, if we renovate the upstairs hotel, that will be another reason for people to come here," said Kent Stehlik with the tourism task force. "It's become a gathering place. It's a showcase to bring people when they come to Dodge to bring people, too".
The city hope to bid for the next round of restoration projects in the Spring. Click here to learn more about the Dodge City Depot Theatre Company.
