On the heels of his once front-runner status, Rick Santorum opened his Wichita headquarters. But when Eyewitness News stopped by a little more than a month later, the door was locked and no one was inside. News of Santorum's campaign suspension puts his Kansas delegates in limbo too.
"Until Santorum gives official notification to the Kansas Republican Party, those delegates will still be bound to vote for Rick Santorum,” Kansas Republican Party Vice-Chair Kelly Arnold said.
Santorum won 33 delegates of the state's 40. The rest went to Mitt Romney. Right now, those delegates still belong to Santorum. The Kansas Republican Party is waiting to see if he will release those delegates. If he does, those delegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice at the Republican National Convention.
“So, most likely what will happen, is the presumed republican nominee will get the support of the rest of the Kansas delegation,” Arnold said.
Arnold says that was the case four years ago, when Mike Huckabee won the entire state.
“He actually released all of our votes. In which in turn, we were united for John McCain at that time,” Arnold said.
Arnold says it could take weeks, even months, before Santorum officially releases those delegates.
