(GODDARD, Kan.) -

These baby snow leopards were born May 17 at Tanganyika Wildlife Park. The big cats are generally from the Himalayan Mountains and can be found as far down as the Gobi Dessert. A large population of snow leopards was recently discovered in Afghanistan.

Scientists believe there are about 7000 to 12,000snow leopards on the planet and they are considered a critically endangered cat.

These leopards typically live at high altitudes, above the tree-line where it can be cold. They wrap their long tails around their faces to protect them from the freezing weather.

They typically eat blue sheep, ibex , rabbits and small mammals. These cats can jump up to 20 feet high. The snow leopards have hair on the bottom of their feet to give them traction in the ice and snow. Their spots or “rosettes” have more gray in their coloring which helps conceal them in the snow and tree-lined environment.

The leopards are the most active around feeding time: 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM, 5:15 - 6:15 PM and 9:15 - 10:15 PM.
