Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer considered the meeting with Superior Aviation as one of the most important parts of his trip to China.
Superior Aviation of Beijing is in the middle of negotiating a deal to buy Wichita's Hawker Beechcraft.
The mayor and a delegation of Wichita leaders traveled to China to meet with Superior's chairman, however that meeting was canceled "due to the sensitivity of the ongoing negotiations."
"Of course we're disappointed to not have met with Chairman Chen," Brewer said in a statement from China. "We were looking forward to the opportunity to begin a positive relationship."
The mayor hosted a luncheon with the American Chamber Beijing, emphasizing the benefits of "forming strong relationships with the Air Capital to support China's growing aviation industry."
Superior Aviation signed an initial agreement to purchase Hawker after the planemaker entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July.
As for the Wichita group that's in China; they also plan to visit Wichita's Sister City of Kaifeng and the city of Wuxi which has an eco-partnership with Wichita.
