SAN DIEGO - Students at Patrick Henry High School elected a lesbian couple as their homecoming queen and king over the weekend.
Senior Rebeca Arellano was crowned king on Friday, while her girlfriend Haileigh Adams received the queen title at the homecoming dance on Saturday.
"I hope people understand that lesbians and gays do need the same rights," Adams said.
The couple said they were not planning to run and was shocked by the national attention they've received.
Both Arellano and Adams have received Facebook friend requests from total strangers and message from people inspired by the young couple.
"I actually think it's awesome," said Shauna Casale, a former Patrick Henry High School student. "I don't have any problem with it. We've always been a very supportive school."
There was also a strong reaction from some who felt the titles should be reserved for a boy and a girl.
"We're embarrassed and it's wrong for a girl to take the spot of king," one Patrick Henry High School student told Fox 5 News.
The pair has become the first same-sex couple to win the award.
"It's just wonderful to have the opportunity to open opportunities for others," Arellano said.
