Sedgwick County Sheriff Bob Hinshaw says he will leave office before the end of the year.
Hinshaw lost August's primary election to Wichita police Captain Jeff Easter. Easter easily won Tuesday's general election.
Hinshaw says he will step down before Easter is sworn in in January in part, because the retirement program offers incentives to retire before the end of the year.
Hinshaw says he and sheriff-elect Easter have spoken, and are planning to meet before the Easter takes over in January.
Easter has not said when he will retire from the WPD.
