Beef prices are projected to rise 5.5% to 6.5% in 2012, due in large part to the continuing drought. The extreme heat this summer destroyed crops that are used to feed livestock.
Meat will cost consumers 3% to 4% more next year.
One Salina restaurant says it pays $0.60 more a pound than it did last year.
By the time 2012 ends, food costs overall will have risen as much as 3.5% this year A similiar increase is expected in 2013.
Poultry is projected to increase 6% this year and an additional 4% next year.
The price of fruits and vegetables fell in 2012 but are expected to increase 4% in 2013.
