A West Wichita neighborhood is put on lock down while SWAT investigates a report of a man armed with a gun.
It happened Saturday evening in the 9700 block of West Bella Vista.
Capt. Rusty Leeds says the incident began at 8:00pm when officers were called to Via Christi, responding to a report of a battery victim. The victim told officers there had been a domestic disturbance at a home on West Bella Vista.
Officers visited the home to check on the welfare of the children there, and to make contact with the man who was involved in the domestic disturbance. Officers tried to talk to the man, but he had locked himself in a bedroom.
That's when officers heard a gunshot. They grabbed the children, taking them to a safe location, secured the perimeter, then contacted SWAT.
After the neighborhood had been secured, SWAT went into the home to investigate. The found a 33 year old man inside, dead from what appears to be a self inflicted gun shot wound.
Capt. Leeds says the woman who was involved the domestic dispute received minor injuries. He adds the children who were in the home, ages 10, 7, and 3, are un-harmed.
