Reno County officials are investigating the death of an inmate. 54-year-old James Richard Shumpert was found unresponsive in his jail cell Sunday evening.
The Sheriff's Office says deputies performed CPR and called an ambulance. Shumpert was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Sheriff Randy Henderson says the preliminary investigation indicates the death was of natural causes. Shumpert was in a bunk in a cell by himself and he has a history of medical problems.
An autopsy will be conducted and the KBI will investigate.
Shumpert was arrested late Saturday for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a firearm and a probation violation.
