A stolen gas card is used to rack up more than $8000 in charges; all at the expense of the Haven School District.
Haven Police Chief Rob Pell said the card was stolen from a classroom at Haven High School and first used on October 31st.
It was used by "many people" to make diesel and gasoline purchases from the Mid Kansas Co-op station in Haven, he said. It was also used at least once at a Co-op station in Buhler.
USD 312 said no one knew the card was missing until the bill arrived in mid-December. The card was immediately canceled.
Superintendent Dr. Patrick Call told Eyewitness News the fuel card is assigned to an agriculture class for trips to a farm. It was taken while the teacher was away on maternity leave.
Pell said the theft was reported to police late last week. Officers have a list of students and faculty with access to the classroom. They are beginning the process of interviewing at least 40-60 people, Pell said.
Gas records show the card was used to make multiple purchases in the same day. "Several people have benefited," said Pell.
USD 312 has filed an insurance claim to see if any of the loss is covered.
