The Wichita City Council voted 4-3 to allow concealed weapons in 111 city owned buildings. Mayor Carl Brewer, Lavonta Williams and Janet Miller voted against the idea.
The change means if you have a conceal carry permit, you can bring your weapon into 84 parks and rec areas, 19 fire stations, 6 city public parking garages and 4 public works buildings. But the conceal carry law would still not allow guns in 279 city facilities, including city hall, schools, libraries and more.
The city council made the change after the Sedgwick County commission voted to make the same change at county owned buildings earlier this year. Council member Michael O'Donnell requested the city take up the issue.
"I believe since we as the citizens of Wichita own the public buildings that you can't just arbitrarily say no you're not allowed to carry a gun in a building that you are a part owner in," O'Donnell said.
The changes techincally go immediatley into effect, but it will take a couple of weeks for the city to put up new signs.
State lawmakers are expected to set a concealed carry standard for all cities in Kansas during their next session.
