Nearly 100 area World War II veterans from western Kansas are in Washington, D.C., as part of the Honor Flight Network.
The program was created in 2005 to transport World War II veterans to Washington to visit and reflect at their war memorials. The Garden City Telegram reported that the 92 veterans who left Monday from Garden City airport include vets from Garden City, other towns in western Kansas, as well as from Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
The two-day trip is the culmination of fundraising efforts of several area residents and other veteran advocates who are a part of the Honor Flight Committee. They've been working since early last year to raise the nearly $100,000 necessary for the trip.
