A homeowner's surveillance camera captured video of a stranger trying to get into their home. The house is locked, but the man peers inside then walks away. When the people who live there got home, they found their house was broken into and some of their things were missing.
Neighbors Jessie and Jennifer Brown say they're surprised by all of the recent burglaries.
"It's surprising to me because it's a close knit community," Jennifer said.
"This is the country, it's free, it's free," said Jessie Brown. "We come out here just to get away from the toil and strife and you want to bring it out here to us? It's not right."
Five burglaries were reported in the area where the Browns live on Tuesday alone. They're among the 22 rural burglaries Sedgwick County authorities have worked in the last 30 days.
Captain Greg Pollock says the burglaries add up to tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff. He hopes the new video will help them break the case and catch whoever is responsible.
"This is the best surveillance video I've seen in the 20 years that I've been in law enforcement," Captain Pollock told us. "We're hoping, with the public's help. we can identify this person."
The person in the video is wearing a leather jacket, glasses and an earring. The Jessie says the burglar is taking a big risk hitting homes in that area.
"The average man out here is probably 57, 58 years old," Jessie said. "He's worked the land all his life. He's stout, he's strong...he's going to beat you down."
They say if you notice suspicious vehicles or people in rural locations call 911. Also if you recognize the man pictured to also call CrimeStoppers at 316-267-2111.
