The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to piece together what led to a bank robbery in Rice County followed by a high speed chase and shootout in Saline County Tuesday. They arrested 30-year-old Jason Michael Gleason after a two hour manhunt.
Eyewitness News has also learned Gleason is brothers with Sidney Gleason. Sidney Gleason was convicted of capital murder in the deaths of Miki Martinez and Darren Wornkey in Great Bend in 2004.
A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was in his car when authorities say Gleason shot at him. The trooper was injured by broken glass. Four other people were in Gleason's vehicle, a woman and three children. The woman and one child were both shot. The KBI says it's unclear at this time who shot the woman and child. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
After firing, Gleason took off on foot. Authorities used helicopters, K-9's and several other units locate him. About two hours later they found him on some property in Saline County and arrested him.
The KBI says earlier in the day, Gleason robbed a bank in the Rice County community of Chase. They say he threatened workers with a gun and left by car with an unknown amount of cash. The KBI is now trying to figure out why the woman and children were in the car with Gleason.
Gleason was booked into jail on seven counts, including murder in the first degree, two counts of murder in the second degree, three counts of aggravated kidnapping and an outside warrant.
He has not been formally charged. Booking sheets list the murder charges without the term "attempted" because both crimes fall under the same statute. Authorities haven't said anyone was killed during this incident.
Gleason has served time in prison for an aggravated robbery conviction in Reno County. He was last in prison June 22. More recently, Reno County says Gleason was arrested on October 5 for failure to appear and trafficking contraband. He bonded out the next day, October 6.
