Weight Gurus Scale: Does It Work?
Many women dread getting on the scale.
But Diane Greenleaf-Kisner, a dietician, stepped up to the challenge. She wanted to test the Weight Gurus Scale, a product that claims to calculate weight, body fat, muscle mass, body water, and bone mass just by standing on it. It sells at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $49.99.
Diane, who is used to calculating complicated health numbers, figured her stats before stepping on the Weight Guru Scale.
"It's .7 off, according to that scale,” Diane said.
Diane said the scale claimed she was heavier.
Next, we tried to sync her measurements using the free Weight Gurus app. The app helps keep track of weight management progess. We had problems scanning the scale's display for our smart phone's camera.
"It says the weight and it says muscle mass, but it doesn't say body fat,” Diane said.
The app only showed two out of our five measurements the scale promised. Diane kept trying, including taking off her socks. But, she never could get the other three measurements on the scale, or on the app.
Diane said she would not use this product in her office.
"My appointments are half an hour long," she said. "It took me a half hour to do this."
But we didn't let those results weigh us down. We kept testing the Weight Gurus Scale back at KWCH. We got it to work for a co-worker. All five numbers rotated through the display. We just had to be a little more patient. We learned all your stats need to cycle through the display, before trying to sync the scale with the app.
“The weight is right, but the body fat is a little high,” our co-worker Shawn Hilferty said.
Our testers thought the scale wasn't user-friendly. They also felt the weight and body fat numbers were a little high.
Our dietician said you can calculate most of these numbers for yourself. However, she feels the best way to get your bone mass is at the doctor's office.
