The Connecticut school shooting has many Wichita parents asking about their child's safety at school.
Every school has individual crisis plans specific to it's building and number of students. Each school practices drills on how to evacuate and what to do in a lockdown situation.
Plus, the district has teamed up with Wichita Police to prepare for events like a shooting.
"We do training and coordination with the Wichita Police Department in their active shooter protocol and their response, it is based on the FBI/ Secret Service response to the Columbine situation," said Wichita Schools Security Services Executive Director Debbie McKenna. "Our security officers have trained with them, many of our staff have trained with them."
McKenna says schools also take every day preventative steps to keep students safe.
"All of our buildings only have one door open, or unlocked, and it is for that purpose that somebody from the outside could not come in," McKenna said.
Plus every person must sign in when they arrive and leave a school building. Schools also encourage students to speak up if they know something might happen.
"One of the areas that we work very hard, with both staff and our students, is report what they hear." McKenna said. "Report the suspicions, report the rumors."
