Monday, Wichita School Board members began the discussion of how to move forward with more than a dozen bond projects.
The projects, part of the 2008 bond issue, were put on “pause and study” when the recession hit.
Southeast High School is one of the bond projects on hold, but now there's question whether to keep it open, or close it and build a new high school in the southeast quadrant.
The new high school was part of the bond issue, but also put on hold.
The money is there from the 2008 bond issue. The problem is the district doesn't have the money it takes to operate a new school.
“The bond dollars are there for projects…it's the ability to operate those facilities as we move forward,” says Wichita Superintendent John Allison.
The school board didn’t discuss Southeast High School at Monday’s meeting.
“We'll have to wait to see what staff brings to us and we'll have to discuss it as a board. We don't know what's going to happen. We'll have to see,” says board member Jeff Davis.
Allison says there is no timeline and the process will be methodical. The board will talk about the bond projects at its next meeting in two weeks.
