The Wichita Board of Education unanimously approved its 2012-2013 budget Monday night.

The $628 million budget keeps the local property tax rate flat and gives teachers their first raise in four years. The budget is $22 million more than last year.

The extra money comes from an increase in state funding and reductions the district has made in capital spending. Superintendent John Allison says the budget far from makes up for the cuts in recent years but says it's a positive step.

In addition to 1 percent salary increase for teachers, the budget also provides for 48 new teachers (25 special education, 15 bilingual and 8 regular classroom positions).
