DMV & tag offices reopening after upgrade

After a week long shut down, the DMV is open again. Tag offices in Sedgwick county will open Wednesday. All have been closed across the state since May 1 to install a new $40 million computer system  

Benjamin Breese has worked at the tag office ten years, so he's pretty used to the process. Now he's learning a new system.

"Everything is scary when you start something new," Breese said. "But its going to be wonderful, it really is."

Last week, the state upgraded every computer. Workers also transferred millions of motor vehicle and drivers license records into the main frame  So all of your information should now be just a click away.

"For regular renewals, I think it will be probably around 30 seconds from start to finish," said Sedgwick County Treasurer Linda Kizzire.

If you own multiple vehicles, the system is set up to renew up to 250 vehicles all at once.

Before the change over, when you came into the tag office you had to sign your name on multiple sheets of paper. That won't happen anymore, it now has a signature pad that goes right into the computer.

Also new, your tag will now match your license plate number and each one will will be printed right on your paperwork

"No more stapling, no more folding, a lot easier," Breese said.

Keep in mind, new systems can come with a few hiccups.

"Anytime you do this large of a conversion, or a new system upgrade, you've got to expect a few issues a few hardships," Kizzire said. "But we are going to work through them and get them done. We will make this system work."

Best advice, bring your patience along with your paperwork when you visit the tag office this week.

When Sedgwick County Tag Offices re-open Wednesday, it will offer extended hours. The tag office will be open from 8 am to 7 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week only.
