The group Pure Water for Wichita says it wants more debates on the fluoride issue, but can’t get one.
“They have turned down multiple requests to appear in debates,” says Don Landis with Wichitans for Pure Water which opposes fluoridating Wichita’s water.
Landis is referring to the group Wichitans for Healthy Teeth, which supports fluoridation.
“We're all in this together so let’s get Wichita’s opinion on why they think fluoride would be good for them and their families and we’ll say why it would be bad for us and our families,” says Landis.
Wichitans for Healthy Teeth says it’s not avoiding debates.
“What we're trying to do is negotiate a debate that would be fair for both sides,” says Dr. Larry Hund, a Wichita pediatrician.
Hund says his group has not only agreed to an October debate with the league of women voters, it's trying to negotiate another debate with the Pure Water group but hasn’t heard back.
“I think it's disingenuous. I think it's calculating… it's an attempt to make us look fearful of their arguments and we are not fearful at all. We have science on our side,” says Hund.
