(DERBY, Kan.)—Derby graduate Colby Liston is back home with family and has started his road to recovery after losing both legs in a car accident.
Shortly after the accident Liston took to his Twitter account with a positive attitude.
Liston still has the same outlook on life as he shared his story with us from the living room of his Derby home.
“I always try to be optimistic about everything and I figured to think about the good things is the best way to be about it,” says Colby.
Liston, who had just started college at KU, and several friends were getting into the back of an SUV that was stopped in the road when another vehicle struck them from behind.
Liston was pinned between the two vehicles. The impact crushed his legs and doctors were forced to amputate both just above the knee.
His father, Matt, says he was the one who had to tell Colby that doctors amputated both legs.
“He said I thought I broke my legs and I told him how severe it was," says Matt.
Liston is in a wheel chair now, but says that won’t last long.
“Hopefully in four or five weeks I’m up on prosthetics and walking around again,” says Colby.
He says he can’t believe how many people have come forward to offer support.
“My phone has been nonstop with tweets, texts and Facebook messages from day one,” says Colby.
“It's been humbling to us how much people want to help,” adds Matt.
