Kansas state lawmakers are looking for a way to tighten sex trafficking laws in Kansas. State officials are working with law enforcement agencies to design a bill to reduce sex trafficking of minors.
The bill would increase penalties for those who entice children into the industry. Attorney General Derek Schmidt, law enforcement agencies and judges are all working together on the bill.
The Kansas Department of Children and Families will help children involved in the sex industry to get help.
The news comes as a new study shows how Kansas compares to other states when it comes to its law on sex trafficking.
"Shared Hope," a non-profit organization designed to work with states in tightening sex trafficking laws released its 2nd annual report card. Kansas ranked an "F."
Kansas isn't alone. 18 other states received the same score. However, according to the organization, it's a step in the right direction. In 2011, 26 states scored an "F."
According to "Shared Hope," more than 100,000 children are sold for sex in the U.S. each year.
