Tuesday night as Barack Obama won the presidential election, racists took to Twitter to send hateful messages – messages that have now been mapped out by a Geocommons user.
According to the map, the most racist tweets by location quotient, or the concentration of treats by population.
And the dubious prize of the most racist state on Twitter is a two-way tie – between Mississippi and Alabama.
The data was compiled with tweets that contained racial epithets aimed toward the president, or monkey comparisons.
365 tweets across the United States were filtered to find the highest ratio of racist tweets. Mississippi and Alabama were followed by Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Dakota, Utah and Missouri.
The map also shows a smattering of hateful tweets in California, where one woman made news Friday for her Facebook activity. Denise Helms, 22, of Turlock, is now under investigation by the Secret Service following a post to her wall that read, "Another 4 years of this (N-word), maybe he will get assassinated this term."
Helms was immediately fired from her job at the Cold Stone Creamery and has since deactivated her page, but she doesn't seem to have learned much from her experience.
"I didn't think it would be that big of a deal," she told Sacramento's Fox 40 news crew. "The assassination part is kind of harsh. I'm not saying like I would go do that or anything like that, by any means, but if it was to happen, I don't think I'd care one bit."
Cold Stone Creamery responded via Twitter to a wave of angry messages, "We're as saddened & shocked as you by her comments It does not reflect our views & she's no longer w/the company."
