John Birmingham, 39, of Patten, Maine, left, after arriving on Woodlea Avenue in Gardenville in his "American Heroes" Mercedes. His destination was the home of Maj. Robert J. Marchanti II, where he offered condolences to the family after the National Guardsman's death last Saturday in Afghanistan. Birmingham, a retired postal worker, is making such bereavement visits his mission in life.
