Several Kansas hospitals and clinics question a list put out by the Food and Drug Administration, linking them to steroid injections blamed for a deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis. The FDA has since pulled down its list, saying some of the information wasn't correct.
The list stated four Wichita hospitals and clinics plus the Hays Medical Center purchased the recalled medicine from the New England Compound Center. Eyewitness News contacted the Kansas hospitals and clinics on the list. They all told us they're double checking their inventories.
"We are mystified why this showed up this way. It doesn't match our records, invoices or packing slips," said a spokesperson for Via Christi.
LTAC Hospital of Wichita confirmed - at one time it had one recalled medication, but it expired before any patient could use it.
Mid America Orthopedics was also listed, but CEO Matt Quinn explains the list is entirely inaccurate. He says FDA officials visited two weeks ago and confirmed they were in the clear.
Galichia Heart Hospital told us "these drugs have not been involved with the meningitis outbreak to date."
The Center for Disease Control has its own list of clinics with the contaminated drug. Its list doesn't include any hospital or clinic from Kansas.
The CDC says it reached out to 75 clinics in question, none of which are in Kansas. The CDC has also contacted at-risk patients.
“We believe there are 14,000 people who have received these injections and so far we have contacted over 97% of those people,” said CDC spokesperson Curtis Allen.
But if you are concerned, Allen says you should contact your physician. He says the earlier you contact a doctor the more likely of a positive outcome.
The CDC says there are now 304 cases of meningitis across 17 states, 23 have died.
