Who is Adam Lanza? Very few are answering that question. Those who knew him say he was "quiet and withdrawn", according to the Washington Post. While it's not known if he had some sort of mental disorder, a local clinician in Wichita is working to raise awareness about mental illness.
“Research really shows us that the vast majority of people that will be diagnosed with a mental illness will never be violent, will never have those tendencies and will never outwardly act on them,” said clinician with the Mental Health Association of Wichita Andrea Kasper said.
Kasper and other local health advocates say when it comes to mental disorders, early prevention is key. “It takes a very negative and serious act to bring that mental illness to the correct providers attention,” said Kasper.
Advocates say more resources need to be put towards help for the mentally ill in schools. "I think schools have to be on board in light of the recent tragedy. Many people are going to question were the proper measures taken?" said expert Stephanie Cline. She's the Director of Children's Support Services and Education at the Mental Health Association of Wichita.
The Mental Health Association says one in five kids in the U.S. cope with a mental disorder. While many fear a negative label for seeking treatment, experts say it's the best way to live with a mental illness.
They say it's never too late to seek help. The Mental Health Association works to get counselors in schools and runs several support groups.
