A group that organizes flights for World War II veterans to Washington D.C. is grounded. Central Prairie Honor Flights flew the veterans from central Kansas to the Nation's capital. The trips give the few vets that remain a chance to visit the national memorial built in their honor.
The Great Bend based organization was formed in 2008, and flew more than a thousand World War II veterans.
The group was recently told it's losing it's affiliation with the national Honor Flight organization based in Ohio.
There was a town hall meeting in Wichita Friday night designed to explain the situation.
Central Prairie says it still has not been given any explanation for why, but we're told it has to do with paper work being filed late, and checks not being cashed for months.
"National has never given me and or the board a reason in writing. I think what you're talking about is hearsay," said Kenton Janzen, the Vice President from the Central Prairie Honor Flights.
Another organization, Kansas Honor Flights, based in Hutchinson, will be taking over the flights that Great Bend used to fly.
At the meeting, Kansas Honor Flights was presented with a check for more than $3000 in donations.
To fly a veteran to Washington D.C., it costs approximately $650.
Along with Hutchinson, there are also four other hubs in Kansas for Honor Flights. They are in Holton, Concordia, Leroy, and Lyndon.
