People lined the streets of Valley Center this morning to say goodbye to someone many had never met.

Army Sgt. Erik May died in Afghanistan July 14. The cause of death has not been determined.

On Tuesday, dozens held up signs, waved flags and rode motorcycles to honor his memory and show his family support. A service was held for May at Valley Center Christian Church, with the processional ending at Greenwood Cemetery.

May lived in Independence but grew up in Wichita. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division based at Ft. Riley.

This was May’s second combat deployment with the ‘Dragon’ Brigade. He deployed to Iraq with the brigade headquarters in 2009.

May joined the Army in September 2007.

May’s awards include an Army Commendation Medal, an Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal with one campaign star, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with one campaign star.
