The campaign of Republican congressional candidate John Koster issued a sharp attack against his opponent Wednesday after an audio recording was posted of Koster saying at a fundraiser that he is against abortion in the case of incest and “the rape thing.”
The controversy erupted after a Seattle-based organization, Fuse Washington, which describes itself on its website as bringing together people “to support progressive causes and leaders,” sent a Fuse activist to ask Koster about abortion at a fundraiser in Everett over the weekend and recorded his response. They posted it to YouTube Wednesday.
On the audio tape placed on YouTube, the Fuse activist asks Koster if there is any situation in which he would agree with abortion being used.
“When a mother’s life is in danger, I’m not going to make that decision … and incest is so rare, I mean it’s so rare,” Koster said. “But the rape thing, you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept her child, gave it up for adoption, she doesn’t regret it. In fact, she’s a big pro-life proponent.
“But on the rape thing, it’s like, how does putting more violence onto a woman’s body and taking the life of an innocent child that’s a consequence of this crime, how does that make it better?” Koster asked.
Koster's use of the phrase “the rape thing” was drawing media attention because Koster, the 1st Congressional District candidate, used it twice in discussing the issue and because of other Republican candidates’ recent political missteps in other states while referring to rape.
Late Wednesday, Koster's campaign issued the following statement:
"Responding to press inquiries in regards to a YouTube video posted today by an organization supporting John Koster's opponent, Suzan DelBene, Koster made the following comment: 'Rape is a vicious and horribly violent crime, and no one in Washington state has been tougher on criminals and sex offenders than I have been, period.'"
Larry Stickney, Koster's campaign manager, said, "The recording was done secretly, then edited to suit DelBene's agenda. Consider that John was at a dinner with many people trying to get his attention, yet his words were still thoughtful and heartfelt. He very clearly and honestly stated his thoughts on an extremely sensitive subject. He has nothing to be ashamed of here.”
But after saying Koster has nothing to be ashamed of, Stickney goes on to say, "The insinuation that John Koster is in some way 'callous' or 'cavalier' when it comes to the subject of rape is another example of the vicious and desperate tactics that DelBene and her surrogates have employed to slander the good name of John Koster."
DelBene, the Democratic candidate in the congressional race, had no immediate comment on Koster's accusations.
