COMPTON, Calif. (KTLA) -- A woman is under arrest after L.A. County Sheriff's deputies say she pointed a laser at commercial jet landing at L.A. International Airport as well as an L.A. County Sheriff's helicopter..
"Sheriff's Air-21, a patrol helicopter, was flying over Compton Friday night, responding to a request from air traffic controllers of the LAX," Sgt. Morrie Zager, Sheriff's Aero Bureau. "The sheriff's flight crew had been told that pilots from a commercial airliner, landing their aircraft at LAX, had been struck by a laser in flight."
Soon after arriving over Compton, the sheriff's helicopter crew was also struck by a laser beam, Zager said.
"The pilot and tactical flight deputy of Sheriff's Air-21 contacted Compton Sheriff's Station patrol deputies at about 10:15PM, Friday.
They said a green laser beam had been pointed at them as they were flying over the 1700 block of West 153rd Street," said Lt. Art Chavez, Compton Sheriff's Station. "The flight crew kept an eye on the home and directed patrol deputies to the origin of the laser beam."
Deputies went to the residence and contacted Suspect Kimberly Rogers, a 27-year old resident of Compton. She implicated herself in pointing the laser at the sheriff's helicopter, deputies said.
Rogers was arrested for discharging a laser at an occupied aircraft. She was booked at Century Regional Detention Facility of the Los Angeles County jail system, where she is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Federal Aviation Adminstration, and Federal Bureau of Investigation, are continuing their investigation into these incidents.
This is the seventh laser incident in the past 12 months, which have resulted in a total of five arrests, where a suspect has pointed a laser beam at airborne pilots of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The other incidents occurred as the sheriff's flight crews flew over Pico Rivera, Lynwood, West Covina, La Puente, and Maywood.
