SAN JACINTO (KTLA) -- A woman has been arrested after she allegedly pointed a laser at officers on the ground and in the air.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, a hand-held laser was pointed at a San Jacinto police officer's patrol car while driving in the 1900 block of Villines Street around 11 p.m. Friday.
A sheriffs helicopter joined the effort to locate the suspect by air and was targeted multiple times, officials said.
Officers were able to identify a home on Villines Street as where the laser was emanating and immediately arrested 32-year-old Irene Marie Levy.
Levy, who has been arrested for similar incidents in the past, was booked into the Larry Smith Correctional Facility.
Pointing a laser at vehicles or aircraft is a dangerous and criminal offense punishable under a federal law signed earlier this year by President Barack Obama. Hazards to pilots include temporary distraction, impaired vision, loss of vehicle control and other safety hazards for passengers and crew.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, California leads the nation in reports of laser attacks with over 3,500 incidents in 2011 alone.
