The Keeper of the Plains has received a lot of coverage lately. In May, the city of Wichita finished a $20 million project perching the Keeper high above where the Little and Big Arkansas Rivers meet. It also improved the area surrounding the statue and teaches about the Native American culture.
When George and I went to do this Wonders story, we had each recently done three other stories on the Keeper. So with this one, we tried to make it as different as we could. I really enjoy visiting the Keeper. I've been there at all different times of the day and each time I find it to be very peaceful. It's close to downtown Wichita but you wouldn't know it because the sound of the river drowns everything out.
The Keeper is open from 5AM until midnight. If you want to see the fire pits lit up, here's the schedule.
Daylight Saving Time:
*Friday & Saturday nights: 9 PM, 10 PM and 11 PM for 15 minutes for each burn.
*Sunday through Thursday nights : 9 PM and 10 PM for 15 minutes for each burn.
Once Daylight Saving Time goes away, typically in late October, the burn hours will be:
*Friday & Saturday nights: 7 PM and 8 PM for 15 minutes for each burn.
*Sunday through Thursday nights : 7 PM for 15 minutes for each burn.
