A Wichita park is getting a new attraction, thanks to some mountain biking volunteers. The group just got unanimous support from Wichita's city council to put in an off-road bike path at the Air Capital Memorial Park in West Wichita.

The park is located just south of Kellogg between Maize and Tyler road

You can take a nature walk at Air Capital Memorial park and not much else. But Jerry Jones sees much more mountain bike trail potential through these trees

"It will wind through these woods, and back on itself," Jones said. "There will be smooth sections, and twisty sections and sections that will go over obstacles."

Jones is a member of the Kansas Singletrack Society, a group of Wichita mountain bike enthusiasts.

"It is all volunteers that are promoting single track mountain bike riding, we build trail and maintain it," Jones said.

The group's next project is to clear a new mile-and-a-half trail at the park next fall. Right now, Wichita only has two other trails where mountain bikes can ride

"Theres a place called Miller's Meadow which is on private property in East Wichita, which is popular and pretty challenging," Jones said. "Then there is a course down in Chapin Park that is great for beginners."

Just don't expect this project to be the group's last.

"We will always be looking for more," Jones said. "It would be great to reach a little further and do a bigger track."

Jones hopes one day Wichita will have a track big enough to host mountain bike races in the future.

The Kansas Singletrack Society has work days scheduled throughout the year to maintain and build the tracks.
