If Hostess goes out of business, people across Kansas and around the world are wondering if that means the end of their favorite snack cakes.
"They are an excellent product," Hostess customer Ed Mankowski says.
Mankowski is a regular shopper at the Hostess Bakery Thrift Shop on South Broadway, loading up on snack cakes and Wonder Bread. He can't believe it may soon be over.
"It's ridiculous!" Mankowski says. "They are going to put the conusmer at risk. That's what I feel--I'm at risk."
He's at risk of no longer being able to enjoy Twinkies, Ho Hos and Ding Dongs--the original snack cakes everybody grew up with. Monkowski is among those wondering how this could be possible.
"Somebody has got to stop and think about the public!" Mankowski adds.
The manager at Leeker's Family Foods in Park City says Twinkies and other Hostess products remain strong sellers. Steve Morrison says they may not be as popular as they were 20 years ago, because there's a lot more competition. But he says they are still loved by lots of customers, and he can't imagine them going away.
"Hostess is a well-known name, and people still want their Hostess products," Morrison says.
Morrison believes that if the Hostess products do go away, it won't be forever.
"If the actual Hostess company closes, I believe somebody else will pick up the product, the name, and still produce Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos," Morrison says. "They'll still be around.
That gives hope to customers. But right now, nobody knows for sure if it's the twilight for Twinkies and curtains for the cupcakes families have enjoyed for generations.
"They've been around since I was a kid, and I"m 64 years old," Mankowski says. "I hate to see a brand name I grew up with go down the tubes!"
