A 16-year-old girl was killed Friday evening after the SUV she was in hit a deer and rolled off the road Friday evening.

This happened near the east end of Walker Bridge in Ellis County.

The SUV had 5 people inside, including the driver. The driver saw a deer on I-70 and swerved to avoid it, but hit it anyway. Then the SUV went into the shoulder, over-corrected and rolled off the highway eventually coming to a stop on its roof.

Kansas Highway Patrol says 16-year old Hope James died at the scene.

Four people in the car were taken to a hospital.

Everyone in the car is from Dighton, in Lane County.
