Memorial to Taylor Sowell

Memorial to Taylor Sowell (By Pilar Pedraza / November 14, 2012)

The Harvey County Commission has requested the Kansas Department of Transportation review the safety of a railroad crossing.

On October 6, Taylor Sowell died when her car was hit by a train southwest of Walton. The tracks are along 48th Street near Hwy. 50.

Sowell's husband and brother were hurt in the crash. The couple's child was at a babysitter at the time of the crash.

The crossing where the crash occured does not have lights or crossing gates.

Those who live nearby do their best to avoid the intersection.

"I don't use it much because you can't always see and I don't know that they let you know soon enough whenthere's a train coming," said Dana Harder, who lives the closest to the railroad crossing.  "If there was crossing arms there then that would make it a lot safer."
