The Hutchinson City Council approves a new crossing signal across 11th Avenue by the Kansas Cosmosphere. The pedestrian crossing will include a red light on a mast arm that comes down when people are crossing.
At the same time, the council decided not to reinstall a traffic signal at Avenue A and Poplar. Instead, the city plans to reconfigure Avenue A into a three-lane road with center turn lanes, bike lanes and on-street parking.
Hutchinson Mayor Dave Razo says the re-configuration of Avenue A could help to make the intersection safer. He says the possibility of a traffic light at a later date could be addressed at another time if they find that it's needed.
Both locations have been the scene of accidents this year, one of them fatal.
