Beware of coyotes even if you live in the city.  That's the warning tonight from a Wichita family whose pet dog barely escaped being eaten by a pack of coyotes Wednesday.

Zoe the Dog's owners say they came outside to find a pack of coyotes attacking her. In fact, they had to chase the animals down the driveway to free their family pet.

Now Zoe's in what is essentially a full body cast with drainage tubes from several puncture wounds.  Her owners say one of the coyotes had her in its mouth and was biting down.

The attack has surprised people in the far northeast Wichita neighborhood.

"I can't believe they came up that far in the neighborhood," said Denise Gardner who lives just around the corner from Zoe and her family.  "I felt awful for her.  That poor dog, that had to be terrible."

The family tells us the emergency vet who saw Zoe said this was the third such attack in the past week. He said, because of the drought, coyotes aren't finding food where they normally would, so they're venturing into neighborhoods.

Denise Gardner can hear coyotes from her back yard all the time.

"They make me a little nervous," she said.

Zoe is supposed to get her drainage tubes removed Friday.  She's also on house arrest for the next several weeks to make sure she didn't get rabies from the coyotes.
